The nightmare journey facing Unai Emery and Arsenal ahead of crucial Spurs clash

Arsenal’s trip to central Ukraine this week could not have come at a worse time for Unai Emery.  Arsenal’s head coach has insisted since the start of the Europa League campaign that this season’s competition is one he is taking very seriously.  So far the squads he has picked for the group stage games, especially away from the Emirates, have proved that - with the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil, Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira all getting game time.  But this week’s trip to Poltava may test Emery’s resolve when it comes to the Europa League - due to the two fixtures that follow immediately on from Thursday night’s game.  Arsenal host Spurs in the first north London derby of the season on Sunday with just three points separating the two rivals. Victory for the Gunners will see them move about Mauricio Pochettino’s side and into the top four ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Manchester United.  And with those games in mind, Emery is expected to rotate his squad for Thursday’s game far more than he has done in previous Europa League encounters this season.   When quizzed on just how many of his star names would be left behind this week in preparation for the north London derby, Arsenal’s head coach was remaining coy.  He said: “For us the Europa League is very important. We want to get first in the group.  "I want to give respect to the competition. We are going to think about it and decide on Tuesday how we can prepare to win.  "And then we think about Sunday."  One of the big reasons why Emery is expected to rotate his squad is due to the gruelling travel plans that Arsenal are facing this week.  The squad will leave London Colney on Wednesday morning before travelling to Luton Airport where they will fly to Ukraine. But they are not able to travel direct to Poltava - so will have to get a flight to either Kharkiv or Kiev.  They then face a three hour coach journey to Poltava, where they are due to train on Wednesday evening at the Butovsky Vorskla Stadium - which is currently covered in snow, with temperatures predicted to drop as low as minus 18 over the next few days.  After Thursday night's game, the squad will then face a three-hour coach journey across Ukraine before eventually getting to the airport where they will back to London.  Arsenal are not due to return to London Colney until around 8am on Friday morning, when the players will be allowed to go straight home and enjoy a day off.  Such a demanding travel schedule is far from ideal for Emery as it will only allow him to work with his squad for one full day ahead of the north London derby.  Which is why the Spaniard looks set to travel with a somewhat changed squad to Ukraine, with Joe Willock, Eddie Nketiah, Emile Smith Rowe and Julio Pleguezuelo all set to feature having been left of the Under-23s team which lost to Derby on Monday night.
